Tax Season Info '23/'24

Hello!

CRA has shut down their efile systems for annual pre-Tax Season maintenance. In theory they resume accepting personal tax returns later this month, barring any catastrophic failures. (A guy can dream.) Which means that although Tax Season is not quite here yet, it will creep up quicker than we would like (Boo...)

So with that in mind, here is your Key Tax Season Dates & Reminders update.

Key Dates

  • This year’s T1 filing deadline = 30 April 2024.
  • Deadline if self-employed = 17 June 2024
  • RRSP contribution deadline = 29 February 2024
  • Date we start taking drop-offs = 15 March 2024
  • The “File-Your-Stuff-On-Time-With-No-Issues” deadline = 12 April 2024. (I didn’t know what to call this. If you drop your stuff off before the 12th, you’ll 100% have your file e-filed on time. After the 12th it’s a “First-in, First-out “ Hunger Games type of deal.)

Reminders

  • We can’t file your tax return until we have a signature from you. Signatures are done electronically through DocuSign. Watch your email inbox closely during April.
  • We can’t file your tax return until your invoice is paid.
  • If you have US tax filing obligations, let us know. There’s a lot of extra paper and pre-work we will need to work through with you.
  • Paper/PDF t-slips are still important, and needed. CRA’s online systems frequently fail to capture your complete tax information. So please remember to send us all t-slips and tax paperwork you receive.
  • When your tax return is completed, you’ll receive a digital download link. The digital copy of your tax return is your formal, official copy. If you would like a paper hard copy, let us know.

Reminder: T-slips

The filing deadline for 2023 T4’s and T5’s is 28 February 2024. If you have a corporate file at my office, expect to receive your t-slips later this week.

So that’s probably enough Tax Season nagging for now. Hope your 2024 is off to a good start, and if you have any questions about the above info, give me a call or email.
